An aileron in a vertical rudder found in the wing of an airplane. The pitch in elevation, as it climbs or descends, is controlled by the use of ailerons on both wings, but using only one wing's ailerons causes the craft to roll, which effects both elevation and direction. The tailfin also has a vertical aileron, called the pennant, which controls yaw the same way a shops rudder steers a waterborne craft.
I don't see any connection, however, between this fact and the word alien, which has never been grammatically examined except by Andy Rooney, who wrote that it was the nominal declension of citizenship in the City of Ai, an ancient near eastern town recorded in the Biblical book of Joshua.
