Revisiting the Dewey shelves, it does become evident that when they say "knowledge", what they really mean is library science. It has come to be seen as the programming section, but that's just a result of modern filing technology. It's really about books and what's in them, where to find them, and a lot of pedagogical opinion on which ones you should read.
Besides electronic file storage and retrieval, the only really notable innovation resulting from actually modern technology is the collection of books on data visualization. Computer graphic capabilities and programmability have broadened the horizons of statisticians.
